Venus Retrograde: Dates for 2026–2031 and How to Stay Calm
If old feelings have resurfaced in recent weeks, or you have felt like rethinking a relationship, a habit or a purchase, you have probably already heard: "That's Venus retrograde." Right now, from 3 October to 14 November 2026, Venus really is retrograde. Let's look at what that means, without scare stories and without fancy words.
What Venus retrograde is
Retrograde motion is the apparent movement of a planet backward across the sky. The word "apparent" is the key one: Venus does not turn around or change its orbit. It is an effect of perspective that everyone knows: when one train overtakes another, for a second it seems that the neighboring train is moving backward.
Venus goes around the Sun faster than the Earth. About every 19 months the Earth and Venus line up on their orbits so that the Earth "overtakes" it, and from the Earth's sky Venus seems to back up against the stars for about six weeks, and then moves forward again. In the middle of this period Venus passes between the Earth and the Sun and is briefly lost in its glare, and then it appears in the morning sky, before dawn.
There is a beautiful fact here. If you mark Venus's path relative to the Earth in the sky over eight years, you get a pattern with five petals, an almost perfect star. Each "loop" of this pattern is one retrograde period.
Venus retrograde dates: 2026, 2028, 2029, 2031
The dates are calculated from planetary positions and given in Greenwich time (UTC). In time zones east of Greenwich the moment may fall on the next calendar day.
- 3 October – 14 November 2026: Scorpio → Libra
- 10 May – 22 June 2028: Gemini
- 16 December 2029 – 26 January 2030: Capricorn
- 20 July – 1 September 2031: Leo
As you can see, Venus is not retrograde every year: there is no retrograde in 2027.
What astrological tradition says
In astrology, Venus is in charge of relationships, attachments, beauty, taste, pleasure and what we value. That is why Venus retrograde is traditionally linked to the theme of rethinking: what is truly important to you, which relationships feel good and which ones you keep going out of habit. People usually advise:
- not rushing into new relationships or big declarations, but taking a closer look first;
- being careful with sudden decisions about your looks: a radical haircut, a change of style, expensive beauty treatments;
- not hurrying with big purchases and gifts, especially expensive ones: first think about whether you really need it;
- using the time to remember what you actually want from close relationships;
- making peace or having a heart-to-heart talk if you have long wanted to, but without trying to bring back something you have already closed.
These are not prohibitions but an invitation to listen to yourself. Many people use such weeks to put their feelings in order, and to look at where their time and energy go.
The skeptical view
There is no scientific evidence that Venus retrograde affects relationships or purchases. Anxious weeks in personal life happen without it too: autumn, tiredness, change. There is also confirmation bias: when you know that Venus is retrograde, you notice everything that looks like confirmation and forget everything else.
Still, a retrograde period has a practical benefit: it gives you a reason to stop and ask yourself what you want. If astrology for you is a way to think about yourself rather than a prediction, such a reason works well. If you do not believe in it, you can simply treat it as a calendar reminder that it is time to listen to your feelings.
How to use Venus retrograde well
- Do not make decisions in a hurry. If you want to change everything right now, wait a few days and come back to the thought. If something is urgent, do it: these suggestions adjust your rhythm; they do not replace common sense.
- Talk about what matters. If something has been left unsaid in a relationship for a long time, pick a calm moment and say it. It is better in your own words than in messages.
- Look at your spending. Not to forbid yourself things, but to understand what truly brings you joy and what was bought just to go along with others.
- Remember what you enjoy. Music, walks, beauty, good food, time with the people who make you feel warm: bring back what is pleasant for you in particular.
- Do not go back to the past for the past's sake. If someone from your past has returned, ask yourself what has changed in you and in them, rather than only recalling how things used to be.
- Plan new things for later. The start of a serious relationship, a big purchase or a new look is better thought through by the end of the period, when Venus moves forward again.
Frequently asked questions
Is it not allowed to start a relationship at this time? There is no ban. Tradition advises not to rush and to take a closer look: much of what seems very bright is tested by time. If you like someone, calm conversation gets in the way of nothing.
Is it true that exes come back at this time? It is a common belief. The explanation is simple: rethinking the past at such a time often leads to thoughts about those who were close to you. Whether you need this person is for you to decide, not the calendar.
Does Venus retrograde affect everyone the same way? In astrology, it is believed that it does not: a lot depends on where Venus is in your birth chart and which aspects it forms. General advice is only a guide.
When does it end? The current period ends on 14 November 2026. The next one starts only on 10 May 2028.
How you can see it in Lilit
In Lilit, the "Sky" screen shows which planets are moving backward right now, and the turnaround dates are calculated by the program from planetary positions, not by artificial intelligence. The daily forecast and the "Life Timeline" take your personal transits to your birth chart into account, so you see how these periods relate to you specifically.
