Void-of-Course Moon: What It Is and How to Treat It
Lunar calendars often carry a note saying "void-of-course Moon." It sounds mysterious, but the idea is simple.
What it is
The Moon travels through the whole zodiac in about 27.3 days, roughly 2.3 days in each sign. While in a sign, it forms exact aspects to other planets one after another. The void-of-course Moon is the stretch from the Moon's last exact major aspect to a planet until it moves into the next sign. In traditional astrology this usually takes into account the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, and the aspects of conjunction, sextile, square, trine and opposition.
The length varies: from a few minutes to more than a day. That is why calendars give the exact start and end times of the period.
What tradition says about it
Figuratively, the Moon "does nothing": it connects to nothing new. So traditionally, during these periods people are advised to:
- avoid planning important beginnings, signing contracts or making big purchases for this time;
- favor routine, finishing what has been started, rest and observation;
- not expect clear results from things begun during this window.
These are not prohibitions but a suggestion to adjust your rhythm to a symbolic "idle run." Many people use these periods as a time for a pause and preparation.
The skeptical view
There is no scientific evidence that the void-of-course Moon affects how things turn out. For many people it is a handy reason to slow down: a short "don't rush" helps you avoid making decisions on the fly. If you do not believe in astrology, you can simply treat it as a personal ritual. If you do use it, do not put off truly urgent and important matters because of it, for example medical or legal ones.
How to use it in practice
- Open the calendar and find the nearest "void" period.
- Plan something calm for that time in advance: tidying up, reading, a walk, sorting papers.
- Schedule important conversations and the start of new projects outside these periods, if you can.
- If something is urgent, do it. The suggestion adjusts your rhythm; it does not replace common sense.
In Lilit, the program calculates void-of-course Moon times from planetary positions, and the "lucky windows of the day" are chosen so that the Moon is not void of course during them.
